I slept with an onion

Onion is anti-ageing and aphrodisiac. It improves skin complexion. It is useful in hair fall. Yet, onions are tamasic and are forbidden to those on the spiritual path because they root the consciousness more firmly in the body.

Onions, divine medicine or demonic potion ?

According to the folk remedy, if you come down with a cold or the flu, all you have to do is slice a red or white onion into rounds, place them on the bottoms of your feet, and put on a pair of socks. Leave the socks on overnight as you sleep. In the morning, you’ll wake up cured of your illness.

Onion is known as phalandu in Sanskrit

Rasa (Taste) = Pungent (raw onion)

Vīrya (Warming / Cooling) = Moderately cooling

Vipāka (Post Digestive Effect) = Sweet

Gunas (Qualities) = Heavy, Onctuous, Sharp

Onion pacifies Vata and increases Kapha. Pitta people should use them with moderation. 

Onion seeds are known to help in erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation and male infertility. It helps to increase libido, quality and quantity of semen. It is a very good vajikara [in Sanskrit, Vaji means horse, the symbol of sexual potency and performance]

Slices of onions fried in ghee and consumed in broth (hello french onion soup!.. without the cheese though) are natural expectorant and can help to rid the lungs of congestion by thinning out secretions.

Onion oil, when added to the hair and scalp, onion juice can provide extra sulfur to support strong and thick hair, thus preventing hair loss and promoting hair growth.
