Herbs for the reproductive tissues

Six months have passed since I started to consume daily a horribly tasting mix of four potent Ayurvedic herbs - namely, Shatavari, Gokshura, Ashwagandha & Guduchi.

Every night, I have been meticulously measuring my therapeutic dose - ranging between 15g-30g of bulk powder - and adding it to warm milk, along with ghee and spices to assist digestion & assimilation.

Why on earth would one drink such potion before bedtime ?

These herbs had been prescribed to me by my mentor - who has been supervising my Ayurvedic Doctorate program - to address severe depletion of my whole body system at about 18 months postpartum.

But did you know that these herbs are primarily known as aphrodisiacs (vajikaranas) and reproductive tonics (shukralas)

  • Shatavari is specific for women as it modulates and stimulates the production of estrogen (think menopause!).

  • Gokshura is specific for men as it maintains testosterone production and is also the most important herb for the urogenital system (think prostate!)

  • Ashwagandha & Guduchi do not have such an affinity for male or female physiologies - the first is a nervine tonic and the second a great support to liver / immune health.

Even still, at times and in certain cases such as mine, all of these herbs are used for both men and women.

Because the shukra dhatu (reproductive tissue) is the seventh and last dhatu to be formed, any disorder at this level also reflects the overall relationship with the entire body. A person with a healthy & abundant shukra (and resulting strong ojas) has a brightness of confidence, with eyes and skin that seem to radiate light. Exhaustion of the shukra dathu becomes apparent through a loss of luster and an ability to sustain creative endeavor.

Childbirth is a highly vata-provoking experience, and without a proper recovery period (aka proper nourishment and rest), vata dosha can easily vitiate the shukra dathu, putting a new mother out of balance. That was me!

Carpenters always have leaky roofs 😅
